The Crab Shack and Portraiture

Had some amazing seafood enchiladas at Joe’s, and Angela and I were in high spirits thanks to the new iPhones and a great Friday evening. Decided to take the camera and the nify-fifty along for some fun pictures, so there they are:

Back Focus

While I was taking my Vader shots today, I realized the rubber-covered tables (benches?) in our courtyard could make a cool picture, so long as they weren’t in focus. I set the focus to infinity and took a picture with my nifty fifty, which caught the glare quite well. I touched it up in Photoshop, obviously (saturation, sharpness, etc.). I think it makes a great background. Enjoy!

I’m a Slacker

Sorry guys, been a few days, eh? I was busy being lazy and playing video games. In any case, I’ve been running short on ideas for shots, so I’m open to suggestions. Please send me yours today! Until then, I figured I would start a new LEGO subcategory entitled, “The Misadventures of Vader,” which will be more of a single frame comic. . . or something. My thought is that you can pretty much put a miniature Vader anywhere, doing almost anything, and it will be funny in some way to someone, somewhere.

Mini-Tracks

I wanted to take a shot of the railroad tracks by the office, and I happened to be in luck because the maintenance truck/train was right below the bridge.

Celebrating Independence Day ‘09 in Wells Branch

We decided to avoid the hussle and bussle of the more popular shows, and make sure we were close to home because our 7 month old (today!) pup was freaking out (he’s passed out at my feet as I type this). The show itself was pretty amazing for a neighborhood sponsored show. I think it lasted around 25 minutes, and the place was packed. Never would have guess that so many people would be there. . . The crowd went so crazy after the finale that an encore was in order! Two finales rock!

On a side note, I’ve never seen so many mortars being launched in a neighborhood (despite the fact that anything except poppers and sparklers are illegal here). I love the 4th! :)

This was my first serious attempt at photographing fireworks. I only wish I had a wide angle lens, or that we had been further away from the show to avoid clipping the bigger explosions. I had fun, but I saw more through my viewfinder than I did straight through my eyes.

HDR is pretty cool

I didn’t know HDR photography existed until a few months ago when a friend of mine took some cool pictures of Scotland (http://www.flickr.com/photos/timothynice/sets/72157617718880164/). When I researched this technique, I ran across a local Austinian’s website (is that what we call them?). To be honest, I’m blown away by his work, and apparently his blog is the #1 travel blog in the world. Pretty amazing.

I probably shouldn’t link this here because I’ll lose what visitors I do have, and he’ll gain more. But, out of respect, here is some awesome HDR photos (you can even buy prints of these): http://www.stuckincustoms.com/

Anyway, I’ve since taken in an interest in HDR photography myself, and these are some of the first I have created: http://www.flickr.com/photos/davidarhodes/sets/72157620616278616/. They definitely seem to be lacking the oompf that I’m looking for, but I’ll get better! :)

Hello World

About me: I’m a Character Technical Directory working at Junction Point Studios/Disney Interactive in Austin, TX. We make video games, which oddly enough, I also enjoy playing :).

There’s so much to type on a first post, so I’ll cut to the chase. I got a new camera last week, something I’ve been meaning to do for quite some time now. It’s a Canon EOS 40D, and it came with a kit lens (28-135mm). I also picked up a cheap Canon 50mm f/1.8 just to have a prime.

I had this crazy idea to start taking pictures of LEGO people in situations that are normal for humans. At the time, it seemed original, and even practical (a method to keep me interested in photography, as well as to serve as a teaching tool). However, I’ve since found some inspiration from these two sources:

Needless to say, I no longer feel like it is an original idea, and I should note that these guys are definitely acting as an inspiration, but I hope people can still enjoy my take on it. If you have any LEGO scene ideas, feel free to let me know, and I’ll see what I can do. Feedback is always welcome. Let the daily adventures begin.
